SCOLIOSIS SURGERY

Scoliosis results in a problematic 45–50-degree spinal curvature. Ideally, surgery is necessary to reduce the curve. If the spinal curve is at a fifty-degree angle, it will most likely become more severe. Left untreated, the deformity in the back will become more conspicuous than it was before.

Spinal fusion corrects a curved spine and restores its structural balance. The procedure stunts the growth of the curvature and stabilises the spine. Traction films and bending are x-rays that are used to test the flexibility of the curve. Through these imaging tests, your orthopaedic surgeon can determine the extent of damage done to the spine.

The question of how straight the spine will be after fusion comes to mind. Your orthopaedic surgeon will straighten the spine as safely as possible. The extent of rectification depends on the severity of scoliosis. The more flexible the curve is to work with, the better the results. Small curves are barely noticeable, and patients have their curves corrected to less than twenty-five degrees.

For spinal fusion, the bent vertebrae are conjoined to form a single solid bone. A bone graft is necessary as it promotes fusion. Small portions of bone are filled into gaps between the vertebrae. Similar to how broken bones heal, the graft heals in place. Metal rods also help stabilise the graft and are held in place by wires, hooks, or screws. A bone graft speeds up unification and healing. Usually, surgeons utilise bone from the patient's pelvis, or they make use of an allograft, also known as a cadaver bone. When there is insufficient bone to extract or none from the bone bank, a synthetic bone that comprises artificial materials is used.

Most spinal fusions last for up to eight hours because it takes time to administer anaesthesia and prepare the patient for surgery. Although the first few days after fusion are uncomfortable because it involves realigning the skeleton, the pain gradually dissipates. Children usually return to school six weeks after spinal fusion.
